Water Introduction
Many versatile breeds are natural swimmers, though some may require more encouragement than others. It's important to introduce dogs to water early and ensure that it is a positive experience for them. Age plays a role in our approach for first-time or novice swimmers.
From 2 - 4 Months of age: Puppies in our program can swim throughout the year. We maintain a warm, climate-controlled tub, even in colder months, to help them avoid developing a sensitivity to cold water as they grow. We use a two-person approach to ensure the experience is enjoyable, controlled, and safe.
5 Months and older: Older puppies and dogs will have access to our on site pond. We recommend positive water exposure prior to training before the colder months to help them handle cold water better as adults. Younger dogs may develop a sensitivity going into adulthood if they are asked to swim in cold water to early.
Swimming
Once your dog is comfortable with being around water, we can steadily improved their desire to swim.
Novice: Once your dog has gotten their feet wet we will start using different items to entice them to swim such as bumpers, bird carcasses, and live ducks. When necessary, we will encourage the dog in the water either by using a kayak or by swimming alongside them.
Intermediate: Once your dog is swimming comfortably, we'll enhance their water exposure to boost their confidence. We will use off-site locations when necessary to further familiarize your dog with various bodies of water. With consistent practice, dogs generally start entering the water more quickly and harder.
Search and Retrieve
As your dog matures, we can incorporate more retrieval and search work. This is based for the waterfowl hunter. Age plays a role when we design your dog's training plan. Remember that your objectives for your dog should align with its age.
Water Retrieval (Started): Dogs are taught the fundamental concept of retrieving in water. The desired item is expected to be dropped within a short distance of the handler.
Water Retrieval (Advanced): Dogs are expected to enter the water confidently and bring the item back to hand. This training is designed for older and more mature dogs.
Water Search (Started): Dog's are taught the basic concept of directional search.
Water Search (Advanced): Dogs search in the direction indicated by the handler. They will send off only when directed by the handler. This training is designed for older and more mature dogs.
